SDE connection requirements: SQL Server Client

The SDE databases (VECTOR, RASTER, AML_VECTOR, SMOKE_MANAGEMENT) use SQL Server as the database platform. 

In order for ArcGIS Desktop applications (ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro) to connect to the SDE, a SQL Server client application must be installed on the user's desktop. 

For ArcMap 10.6 and prior, and ArcGIS Pro 2.4 and prior, the SQL Server Native client can be installed. Refer to this Esri article for more specific details. 

  • For NDEP GIS users, this should be already installed via Desktop Authority. 
  • For Parks, OHV, and other divisions, it does not get automatically installed. 
  • S:\Software\Microsoft\SQL Client

For ArcMap 10.7 +, and ArcGIS Pro 2.5 +, the Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server should be installed. Refer to this Esri article for more specific details.

  • Recommend installing Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server
